The Exira Vikettes were crowned Champion of Class 1A at the 2010 Girls State Basketball Tournament. Ann Walker's last second layup sealed the Vikettes victory, as they defeated the Mt. Ayr Raiderettes by a score of 57-55. Walker and teammate Hallie Christofferson were both named to the all tournament team. Christofferson was also named captain of the 1A tournament team, MVP of Class 1A and All Tournament, All Class MVP. Watch for a comemorative special edition saluting the Vikettes coming next week. The Audubon Wheelers saw their run in the 2010 Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament come to an end with an overtime loss to the Mt. Vernon Mustangs on Tuesday, March 2. The Wheelers finished 21-2 on the season. Senior starter Mykel Brannan said, "We watched the girls playing at state in 2006 (the last time Audubon played in the state tournament) and said we would be there our senior year, and we were!" February 26th, 2010 ELK HORN — Exira knew what postseason play was all about. ELK HORN— It’s not quite March, but the Madness has begun. ATLANTIC— A perfect regular season was followed with a perfect run through the Regional Tournament, and now, Exira is headed back to the State Tournament for the second time in three years. GUTHRIE CENTER — On the first day of practice this season, Audubon coach Derek Sonderland had a vision. He had the Wheelers climb up a ladder to practice cutting down the net. February 25th, 2010 With all due respect to our local Firemen, I feel we owe a great BIG THANK YOU to the employers who let them leave a the moment they are called, and sometimes theya are gone for quite a long time. I think I can speak for the entire community. Lance Meaike told the Audubon City Council Monday night he wanted to take advantage of a city program to help make improvements on a restaurant he owns and operates in town. Audubon City Council Member Andy Griffith suggested limiting traffic on Seventh Avenue, and discussing the idea with the Audubon County Board of Supervisors. February 20th, 2010 Devin Lickteig and Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira coach Rick Andersen had a plan. The opportunities were aplenty for Audubon wrestlers at the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A District tournament in Guthrie Center. Even with only four wins this season, Audubon knew anything can happen in the postseason. Audubon was starting to feel some deja vu last Tuesday night against West Central Valley. The years of the Vikings running up and down their home court is now nothing but a memory. Former Elk Horn-Kimballton basketball player and current coach at Guthrie Center, Seth Poldberg, said he has high hopes for his former team when he was at a game in Audubon last Saturday night, Feb. 6. As the town has a little over 10,00 people, the town of Carroll is not a small town in western Iowa. February 19th, 2010
