ATLANTIC - Forrest Gump’s mother once said, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you just never know what you’re going to get.”
That was the story ‘in a nutshell’ as the Atlantic Trojans (8-10) struggled to put one in to the win column. But, they did persevere and beat Clarinda 58-47 at the AHS gymnasium Friday night.
Atlantic seemed to let Clarinda stick around throughout much of the first half thanks to a healthy diet of defense and solid rebounding prescribed by coach Van Gilmore, as well as ice-cold shooting from the Trojans.
“I didn’t think our effort was very good, on either end of the floor” said Trojans head coach Steve Blazek. “We just didn’t play with very much intensity. We just missed a bunch of bunnies.”
Pushing aside frustrations from the first two and a half quarters, a person has to remember that the Trojans did indeed come out with a ‘W’. No matter how it came, they got one.
The Trojans’ two double-digit scorers were Chet Meneely and Jordan Holmes. Meneely played especially well offensively in the third quarter on his way to a team-high 16 points total for the contest.
“Chet ended up being 6 for 10 from the field, led us with six rebounds. One positive with Chet is that I thought he played really intelligently with three fouls ball game,” Blazek said of Meneely. “He never picked another one up after picking his third one up early in the third quarter.”
The offensive struggles continued to wane as the third quarter progressed. A five-point lead for the Trojans quickly swelled as Meneely and freshman Sam Markham both sunk critical deuces later in the third quarter to give Atlantic some more breathing room…a 9-point lead.
And then, Holmes chipped in two of his 12 points for the night late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for the Trojans to put them in front by 10 points with just two minutes to go in the contest. The Trojans, with this win, improved to two games below .500 (8-10) on the season.
Waiting in the wings for the Trojans is Red Oak. The Tigers (3-14) are the next in line below the Trojans in the conference. They have two wins against Shenandoah, and one against Clarinda. The stage will be a double-header at home in Atlantic on Tuesday night.
As a ‘memory-refresher’, the Trojans’ first outing with the Red Oak Tigers was a 58-27 Trojans victory just nine days ago in Red Oak. The girl’s game is slated for 6:15 p.m. with the boy’s game to follow at approximately 7:45.
Game Scoring (02/05):
Atlantic (8-10): Chet Meneely 16, Jordan Holmes 12, Taylor Petersen 9, Kellan Benn 8, Dalton Franken 5, Sam Markham 4, Jonathan Olsen 4. Free throws: 10/15
Clarinda (1-17): Kramer Samuelson 14, Ryan McNeal 10, Jared Stansbery 9, Tyler Steeve 6, Brandon Sweet 6, Nick Lasley 2. Free throws: 10/13
