MS Auction slated for March 5

After a bad economic situation forced the cancellation of the event last February, the 13th annual Multiple Sclerosis Society Auction has once again been slated for this spring in Atlantic.
According to Mark Fagen, owner of the Fireside Lounge in Atlantic, the auction is scheduled for Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at the Fireside Lounge. From 5-7 p.m., patrons will be served free chili before the auction.
At 7 p.m., Rex McDermott will auction off a variety of items, packages, and services with all proceeds from the evening going to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Anyone interested in donating items for the auction can contact Mark Fagen at 712-249-3107.
Fagen said the auction got started 14 years ago when Keith Allenstein owned the Fireside Lounge. At that time, someone who worked there was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Allenstein began the auction as a fund-raiser and when Fagen purchased the business in 1999, he continued the fund-raiser. "At the time, a lot of the employees were affected directly or indirectly with MS," he said. "I wanted to keep up with a good cause and continue the fund-raiser when I took over the business."
Fagen decided to cancel the auction in 2009 because many area citizens were under increased financial stress from poor economic conditions and multiple job losses. Each year it has been held, however, the fund-raiser has generated more than $10,000 yearly for the MS Society.
