The Secondary Roads maintenance shed located in Exira was severely damaged last month when the truck owned by the county struck the building.

Insurance inspectors were expected on site this week to assess the damage. Workers normally housed at that location are being asked to report to the Audubon facility until the safety of the building is determined. Audubon County Engineer Anil Sharma asked that the Board of Supervisors consider putting up a new building at the site, even before the insurance company makes a determination.

All three board members agreed that waiting for an insurance determination was the “only” thing they could do at this point and if repairs would be covered by insurance, then the existing structure would be repaired. Supervisor Vernon Venteicher said, “It seems we have room for everyone to report at the Audubon building, so if they Exira building isn’t able to be repaired, I think we look into that option, first.”

Bruce Nelson agreed stating, “There is a convenience factor to having the Exira building, but we can always park the equipment there, and have the guys report here to work, or figuring something out before we go pouring money into a new building.”
