An Audubon funeral director has been sanctioned and had his license suspended by the Iowa Board of Mortuary Science after engaging in unethical actions the board called “appalling” including making sexual innuendoes, sending an intern to purchase a gun after discussing killing his wife with employees and keeping a keg of beer in the funeral home.
Mark Kessler of Kessler Funeral Homes in Audubon and Exira has had his license suspended by the board until he completes a “comprehensive mental and sexual/professional boundaries evaluation at a facility approved by the state,” which will determine if there is any need for treatment or “practice restrictions.” He will also have to pay a $1,000 civil penalty and is “permanently prohibited from serving as a funeral director preceptor or from supervising an intern assigned to another preceptor.”
